PERSPECTIVES

Dr. Citak and Ms. Busch shared an exciting upcoming program of education and research, called Research Anchor Publishing. Our discussion uncovered 3 core themes. These themes and their supporting insights are highlighted below.

1. What is Research Anchor Publishing?

Ms. Busch informed us that Research Anchor Publishing is a medical consulting company for medical sciences. They aim to teach international clinical research methodologies in a practice-oriented way to support early-career researchers with their scholarly activities.

Ms. Busch shared that they offer training with different levels of difficulty. Learners can either watch the online lectures systematically from one part to the other, or watch each section independently.

Research Anchor Publishing’s course catalog basically reflects a growing researcher starting from how to read studies, how to develop a meta-analysis, to how to submit a study to specific scientific journals in the end.

2. The Driving Purpose for Operating Research Anchor Publishing

Usually you start a new program, a new course, or a new company because you see a need. So, let me ask you this - have you noticed then that there have been gaps in the ability of getting education in understanding research? The reason for doing this, I presume, is borne out of the fact that there's been some real gaps in education.

Dr. Bhandari

Dr. Citak and Ms. Busch agreed with Dr. Bhandari that there is a great need for education in various aspects of research. When they were giving seminars to medical students and fellow physicians in the Endo Clinic Hamburg, the attendants wondered whether they could receive more information because they were starting to write their doctoral thesis and needed to learn how to cite, as well as other knowledge. Neither the classes in medical school nor seminars in the hospital provided enough training to students and clinicians on how to do research. More education was highly requested. The three co-founders of Research Anchor Publishing decided to start this project in a way that will allow many people to benefit from it.

3. What does Research Anchor Publishing offer?

Ms. Busch stated that they would start to teach people from the basics, like how to read a paper efficiently, how to retrieve the needed information from various medical databases. They would also start with teaching how to write a specific study design, starting with the case report because it has the lowest level of evidence, and is the easiest way to publish. These are the three aspects that they would cover in the beginning.

Since most research methodologies require English medical terminology, the courses are offered in German as well as English language.

I think there is no other company offering those opportunities. There are so many companies that just offer proofreading. But proofreading is not everything. We want to try to teach people more. For example, if you join our course, our goal is not to support you in all your 50 or 100 papers. We want to show how to do research in maybe one, two or three papers. And later on, you can do it on your own way. Because it (research and publishing) was really hard at the beginning for me. But I was then motivated and I'm still motivated to publish more and more. Our co-founders have been doing research for many years. Each of us has our own specialties and we can help people to learn how to do research. I think this opportunity is still missing worldwide.

Dr. Citak

Questions and Answers:

Dr. Bhandari: Who can get the benefit from your courses at Research Anchor Publishing?

Dr. Citak: We offer them for young medical students or other students who want to do research like master’s or doctoral thesis. We also want to help all our medical colleagues. We want to help people from the beginners, to people that are already doing research. We want to try to help everyone who wants to do research.

Dr. Bhandari: When are you going to launch the education plan?

Dr. Citak: It will launch in the next few weeks. By the middle or late of September, we will have the whole program ready to offer, from how to read the paper, to how to submit a paper to the journal, like from the beginning to the end. That's our goal.

SENSE-MAKING

Co-founders of Research Anchor Publishing, Dr. Citak and Ms. Busch talked about their goal of helping more people to learn how to do research. They offer courses in German and English, to a variety of learners, from the beginners who are looking to get involved in research, all the way through to those looking to design a study or even conduct a meta-analysis. In the beginning of this project, the education modules will cover how to read a paper efficiently, how to retrieve the needed information from various medical databases and how to write a specific study design, starting with the case report.
