It is well understood that symptoms can continue well beyond the acute stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection – a condition commonly referred to as "long COVID". However, less is known about what exact symptoms this condition entails, what causes them, how long they can persist, and who is at greatest risk for developing them. These longer-term health impacts are also raising concern over their potentially deleterious effect on patient outcomes following surgery, with evidence suggesting that patients with a perioperative COVID-19 diagnosis within 7 weeks of elective surgery have an increased risk of mortality compared to patients without previous infection. In this OE Insight, we explore new evidence that is helping to inform best-practices for these patients.
