COVID-19 Delays: Patient Perspectives on Orthopaedic Surgery Postponements and Post-operative Care Limitations .
Pandemic-related shutdowns created major disruptions in orthopaedic care, and two surveys from a Canadian sports medicine center help illustrate the impact. Patients whose surgeries were postponed commonly reported worsening symptoms, rising pain levels, and significant emotional strain, with many concerned about delayed return to work, sport, and daily activity. Those who had recently undergone surgery faced a different challenge: clinic and physiotherapy closures left many feeling their recovery was slowed, especially when virtual rehab fell short of in-person care. Across both groups, reduced access to timely surgery and hands-on rehabilitation emerged as key barriers, underscoring the need to prioritize orthopaedic procedures and post-operative support during system re-openings.
