Are Volar Locking Plates Superior to Percutaneous K-wires for Distal Radius Fractures? A Meta-analysis
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2015 Sep;473(9):3017-277 randomized controlled trials comparing volar locking plates and K-wires for the treatment of dorsally displaced distal radius fractures were included in this meta-analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine how these two treatments compare in terms of function, wrist motion, radiographic outcomes, and complications. The results demonstrated that patients treated with volar locking plates had better DASH scores at 3 and 12 months, but these differences failed to reach clinical significance. The volar locking plate group provided superior wrist range of motion at 3 months only, and no differences were observed in radiographic outcomes and complications other that superficial wound infections, that were more common in the K-wire group.
