Ultrasound- Versus Landmark-Guided Corticosteroid Injections in Patients With Shoulder Pain: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review.
J Clin Ultrasound . 2025 Mar-Apr;53(3):525-534.Thirteen randomized controlled trials including 656 patients with shoulder pain were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing ultrasound-guided (USG) versus landmark-guided (LMG) corticosteroid injections. Pooled outcomes of interest included visual analogue scale (VAS) scores at 1 and 6 weeks postinjection, changes in VAS scores, and shoulder range of motion (ROM) at 6 weeks postinjection. USG injections demonstrated significantly better VAS scores at 1 week and improved abduction ROM at 6 weeks, while other outcomes showed no significant differences. These findings suggest USG injections may provide superior early pain relief and better mid-term improvement in shoulder abduction compared to LMG injections.
