Syndesmotic Fixation in Supination-External Rotation Ankle Fractures: A Prospective Randomized Study
Foot Ankle Int. 2014 Oct;35(10):988-95.24 patients undergoing surgical treatment for a supination-external rotation (SER) IV (Weber B) ankle fracture and intraoperatively confirmed syndesmosis disruption were randomized to syndesmotic screw fixation or no syndesmotic screw fixation. The purpose of this mid-term follow-up was to compare pain, function, and radiological results between treatment groups. With the numbers available, no significant improvements in Olerud-Molander score, VAS pain and function, RAND 36-Item Health Survey (physical and pain), or radiologic findings were detected between syndesmosis transfixation and no-fixation patients at 4 years postoperatively.
