Decreasing Post-Operative Narcotic Usage Following Total Knee Arthroplasty Requires More than Simple Education: A Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial.
Orthop Clin North Am . 2023 Oct;54(4):377-382.38 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive either preoperative education (n=17) or standard of care (n=21). Outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), number of opioids dispensed and consumed, number of patients that returned to driving, physiotherapy, and returned to work, number of patients still taking opioids at 5 weeks, number of patients who understood their postoperative pain plan, and postoperative pain plan perception on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). All outcomes were similar between the two groups except for the number of patients who returned to driving, which was significantly higher in the standard of care group.
