Sixty patients with hip osteoarthritis pain were randomized to receive either a pericapsular nerve block (PENG) with steroid bupivacaine (n=30) or an intraarticular injection (IAI) with steroid bupivacaine (n=30). Outcomes of interest included pain intensity measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Harris Hip Score (HHS), Quantitative Analgesic Questionnaire (QAQ), and patient satisfaction. Outcomes were measured at 1 day, 1 week, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks, post-injection. Pain intensity scores were significantly better on day one in the PENG block group, whereas the IAI showed better pain scores at 4 and 8 weeks, post-injection. Additionally, WOMAC scores were significantly better in the IAI group at 8 weeks as well as HHS scores at 4 and 8 weeks.
