Knotless suture in revision total joint arthroplasty: a prospective randomized controlled trial.
Arch Orthop Trauma Surg . 2024 May;144(5):2207-2212.Eighty patients undergoing revision total joint arthroplasty were randomized to receive either barbed suture wound closure (n=40) or conventional suture wound closure (n=40). The primary outcome of interest was the duration of wound closure. Secondary outcomes included closure rate, the number of sutures used, incidence of postoperative complications, and scar assessment scores. Outcomes were assessed over three months postoperatively. Overall, the results revealed that barbed sutures reduced wound closure time by an average of 6 minutes (p=0.008) and required fewer sutures (p<0.001), with no significant difference in postoperative complications or scar assessment scores between groups. These findings suggest that barbed sutures may enhance surgical efficiency in revision arthroplasty without compromising patient outcomes.
