Prospective randomized evaluation of the need for blood transfusion during primary total hip arthroplasty with use of a bipolar sealer
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2011 Mar 16;93(6):513-8140 patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty were randomized into two different groups receiving differing blood management procedures. The treatment group received radiofrequency energy using an aquamantys 6.0 bipolar sealer, and the control group received standard Bovie electrocautery. The results from this trial indicated no significant differences between the two groups in terms of number blood transfusions and total blood loss, suggeting that the bipolar sealer did not improve hemostasis during total hip arthroplasty.
