Protocols Used by Occupational Therapists on Shoulder Pain after Stroke: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysi
Occup Ther Int. 2021 May 3;2021: 8811721.Four randomized controlled trials containing 80 patients with shoulder pain post-stroke were included in this meta-analysis comparing occupational therapy interventions (i.e., electrical stimulation, therapeutic bandaging, and dry needling) vs control. Pooled outcomes of interest included shoulder pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS), shoulder range of motion in abduction, flexion and external rotation, the Fugl-Meyer assessment score, and the manual function test. Results of the meta-analysis demonstrated significantly lower pooled VAS shoulder pain (p=0.0004) and greater shoulder flexion (p=0.003) in the intervention group compared to the control group.
