Barbed sutures in total hip and knee arthroplasty: what is the evidence? A meta-analysis
Int Orthop. 2016 Feb;40(2):225-314 studies (n=588) with patients undergoing total knee or hip arthroplasty were included in the present analysis. Studies included patients randomized to undergo wound closure with either barbed or conventional sutures in order to determine if barbed sutures were able to improve surgical outcomes without compromising safety. The findings of this study suggested that the use of barbed sutures was able to reduce wound closure time and result in $298 USD of saving while maintaining a comparable safety profile to conventional sutures.
