OrthoEvidence identified published randomized controlled trials that assessed the use of
platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of osteoarthritis through a search of
electronic databases, reviewing the reference list of included publications, and suggestions from
experts in the field.
The inclusion criteria for published trials were: 1) patients allocated to interventions in a randomized
fashion, 2) trials provided a comparison of platelet-rich plasma to hyaluronic acid, and 3)
trials evaluated pain, function, stiffness or safety outcomes.
Data relating to clinical outcomes, statistical significance of findings, and product
characteristics were extracted from each of the included randomized controlled trials and
summarized in the graphics below.
